Sharing Jesus for Beginners

Sharing the message of salvation found only in Jesus Christ can be confusing when you first become a Christian. You can feel inadequate, unsure of yourself and fearful of rejection by family and friends. You don’t want non Christian people to feel that you are looking down in judgement on their lives, it can be so frustrating. Remember that you yourself came to Jesus Christ and accepted His offer of forgiveness and eternal salvation so you do basically  know how to witness to others.

The great Apostle Paul changed the world through his dedicated life of sharing the gospel with non Jewish people.  Was he a gospel superman a strong hero of Gods work?

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

1 Corinthians 2: 1-3 (KJV)

Its not unusual to feel weak and fearful when it comes to sharing the message of salvation, even the Apostle Paul felt like that. So pray to Father God for boldness, ignore your fearful feelings and share this amazing message of salvation with others and the Lord will help you.

Whats your motivation?

We share this wonderful message of freedom, this message of grace, this message of Gods amazing love because we love our families, our friends and our unsaved communities.  We are motivated and driven by a deep love that God has put in our hearts by His Holy Spirit when we received our salvation. We love those around us and want them to experience the peace and wholeness that only God can give.  We do not ever want to be separated from them even in death.  We have the assurance of Heaven but when a non Christian dies they face judgement and a real eternal and terrifying hell awaits them.

You know Jesus who died to save you, tell others about Him. Lift high the Cross before their eyes. Tell them that God became Man that man might be lifted up to God. Tell them of Calvary, and its groans, and cries, and sweat of blood. Tell them of Jesus Christ hanging on the Cross to save sinners. Tell them that there is life for all who accept Jesus Crucified in their place for their sins! Tell them that He is able to save to the uttermost, all them that come unto God by Him. Tell them that He is able to save at the eleventh hour, and to say to the dying thief, “Today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” Adapted from C. H. SPURGEON

Prayer has to be our first priority

When it comes to sharing the message of salvation found only in Jesus Christ you must always take time to pray. Prayer is the starting point, ask the Lord to give the non Christian people you are witnessing to an open heart, ask Him to set them free from darkness and allow them to receive salvation, sincerely cry out to the Lord ask Him to draw them into salvation.

Prayer + the Gospel message + patience and love = a decision for or against receiving salvation.

I was practicing street preaching in a friend’s walled garden, I did not know that there was a bus stop on the other side of the wall. I had decided to stick to using three simple salvation scriptures to practice sharing the gospel in three minutes.

That afternoon a friend arrived at the gate and called me over, when I arrived they told me a lady at the bus stop wanted to talk to me.  I approached this lady, she explained she had heard me in the garden and sincerely wanted to pray and receive salvation. I prayed with her and she received Jesus Christ as her Lord and saviour. The bus arrived and the Lady and her child said goodbye, she was going to look for a local church near her home.

Why am I sharing this when I feel so inadequate?

Because its not our clever preaching, our complex and deep understanding of the Bible that gets non Christian people saved it’s the power of God that convicts a persons heart and draws them into salvation.

“Salvation belongs to the Lord,” (Psalm 3:8)

When a non Christian prays sincerely to God the Father and for forgiveness of their sins in Jesus Christ, the non Christian’s sins are removed, they are cleansed, their relationship with God the Father is restored eternally, and they become a new creature, a Christian (2 Cor. 5:17). This is the work of God the Spirit and not the works of man.

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power (1  Corinthians 2:1-4).

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe (1 Corinthians 1:18-21).

It’s simple for you as a new Christian to share the message of salvation, its not complicated, you do the sharing of Gods word, Jesus Christ will draw people to Himself and they will receive salvation.

There are so many great Christian resources available to make it easy to share your faith (write your testimony but keep it Christ centered all the way through). You can get good DVD’s, CD’s, books and tracts.  Find a good full gospel Christian tract like “Knowing God” and share it with your family, friends and neighbours, stick to the scriptures (do not get side tracked into irrelevant issues), listen to their thoughts, be patient and never force people into decisions. Be relaxed in your faith that the Lord will draw them and bring them into salvation. Non Christian people are interested when you share how the Lord has changed your life for the better. When you’re relaxed and not forcing them to make a decision, its attractive, it’s a light in the darkness that draws them in.

If you like you can use the Roman Road (see pdf below) a simple power packed journey through the scriptures into salvation. You can also use the Four Spiritual Laws (see pdf below) its up to you to find something that you can work with comfortably.  The point being that you share the truth of salvation found only in Jesus Christ with your family, friends and neighbour’s using a step by step approach. Listen to them, be patient, disagree or agree but stay in peace and talk to them in love always bringing them back to the scriptures.

What is Evangelism?

It is the clear communication of the message of salvation found only in Jesus Christ, it should include a warning about the reality of hell (that God desire all to be saved, that we choose hell if we reject Christ), an offer to pray with them for salvation. Evangelism includes warning people about sin and the consequences (John 16:8; Acts 24:25; Revelation 20:11-15). It includes an explanation of God’s solution for sin —salvation found only in Jesus Christ (Acts 8:29-35; Romans 3:21-26; 2 Corinthians 5:21). It includes a call to repent, turning away from a sinful life back to a life with Father God in the center  It requires people to believe the gospel by faith and to receive salvation by grace and not works (being a good person or giving to charity) (Mark 1:15; Luke 13:1-5; Acts 17:29-31; Romans 1:17; Romans 10:9-13). This is evangelism.
