Organising an Outreach

How do we reach the diverse and multicultural communities represented around the United Kingdom with the message of salvation?

There are many evangelistic activities that we can do but the most important element to reaching our communities is “You” Christ’s body the Church. The local Church has to have a clear vision and work hard and bring the uncompromising truth of salvation in Christ.

Outreach ideas listed at the end of this section.

Winning the United Kingdom for Christ will not take one huge revival, it will take lots of revivals manifesting in our villages, towns and cities.

Little fires of revival in local churches around the United Kingdom leading to one large fire a UK revival. The key to a national revival is Local Churches adopting a congregational decision and commitment to take evangelistic action in their communities. For the local Church (you) to get a vision for sharing the gospel in their immediate area and to start evangelistic programs that bring people into Church.  We have to have a deep longing in our hearts for a visitation of Gods Spirit and to really pray that the lost around us will be saved.

Our vision must be that every person in the United Kingdom gets to hear a clear presentation of salvation in Christ Jesus.

Remember a thought that stays a thought speaks only to the thinker, our direct evangelistic actions speak to everyone in our community.  When the local Church (You) begin to run with the vision of sharing the gospel (salvation only found in Jesus Christ) with your communities and to build people into the Church, then revival will come and then you will see growth both spiritually and in numbers.  The only thing that stands between successfully reaching our UK communities or not is our willingness. We have to remove the idea of failure its not an option, we have to pray, prepare ourselves and share with those who do not know the truth of salvation.

Evangelism is the job that we are all called to do:

Jesus said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. (Mark 16:15-19)KJV

The last minute instructions of Jesus Christ to the Apostles before He was received into heaven was “go to everyone (not just the Jewish nation) every nation (people of every culture on earth)  and share the message of salvation.

We  are commissioned to share (preach) the gospel message of salvation found only in Jesus Christ (all of us not just the leaders). Salvation will come from the Lord.  Remember that the great commission is given to us the Church!  Evangelism is not a separate ministry it is the responsibility of all our local Churches through out the communities of the United Kingdom.

We have to be willing to say “Yes” to Father God and start to equip ourselves to do the work of sharing this gospel with the non Christians.  We have to arise to this challenge and start to do the work that Father God has called the Church to do. To encourage the growing living Churches and to help our brothers and sisters in Christ to  re-establish their dwindling Church congregations right across our nation.

And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. Isaiah 61:4 (KJV)

That we may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Philippians 2:15 (KJV)

Its time as the Prophet Isaiah said to

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. Isaiah 60:1,

Its time for us to take a look at our communities and realising that it is our responsibility to reach out to them in love. To share this free gift of salvation that we have received in our lives.

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me (wants to be my disciple), let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9:23) KJV

To this you were called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow His steps: (1 Peter 2:21)

The instructions of Jesus are clear, the local Church members must Go ye into all the community and preach the gospel to every creature.

But how do we reach out to our communities in practical ways?

Firstly it’s by grace and love, realise its our calling as a Christians to witness to our communities.

Secondly it’s by grace and love, its the job of the local Church as a group to reach out with the gospel message and invite people in.

Thirdly it’s the God of grace and love who will draw all men (women) to Himself in Christ, as we share He will save.

We are called to be a peculiar people, why do we so often try to be like the world?  We are supposed to be people who run with the gospel, why are we asleep? When the Church is functioning correctly every believer is and should have a desire to share the gospel but we need that vision.  Individually and as a Church group we need to have a vision to reach the lost.

Think about your target audience and what time is best to reach out to them for example Mum’s and toddler group (morning outreach). Evening outreaches are less attractive to the elderly as they do not like going out at night. So think carefully about the time of day which best suits your outreach idea.

Outreach Ideas’s

We will list some of the ways individuals, groups and Churches are reaching out to their communities.

If you have been successful at reaching your community with the gospel message why not email your outreach idea to info@ukmce.com or via the contact page and we will do our best to add it to this section.

  1.  1 Person a Year Plan (see “How to get Involved” ) – This witnessing plan can be adopted as a whole Church outreach. Each individual member following the Plan. If your Church members are successful the Church will double in 1 year.  We would recommend that the whole Church congregation take part in this outreach plan. It works in any size Church and always brings growth. The Church should acts as a support network praying together and encouraging each other. These small groups can organise social events like meals where you can discuss what Christianity is. Some of the community will not be reached by this outreach method so try other outreach idea’s as well.
  2. Up My Street (see “Up my street“) – This is a good way of reaching your immediate neighbours and those who live around you.  It can be done as a Church outreach and can be a very fruitful way of reaching your community.
  3. Street outreaches – Pray together as a Church about this type of outreach. Select a good spot (shopping precinct or a large enough busy city street it’s really up to you), get permission if required. Go out as a group (some worshipping to CD’s or with instruments, some doing surveys, handing out tracts and talking to people).  The act of live worship on the street will draw upon the presence of Father God and great things will happen as you witness. Some Churches do not like street outreach but it works. We did a two week outreach with twenty people, two thousand people prayed and gave their lives to Jesus Christ on the street so get out there.  You can do all kinds of activities, Dance, juggling, preaching, mime work whatever grabs the peoples attention, once you have their attention you can share the gospel. Pray with them, get their details and invite them to Church.
  4. Healing Meeting – This is a great outreach to the lost. Think about how many sick people are in the community! You can do this as a Special Sunday Service or as an Evening outreach. Produce enough leaflets to post around the Church or meeting place around 10,000 (if its a small village adjust the number).  Organise volunteers to post the leaflets, print basic black and white maps of the area and highlight the streets you require them to leaflet (your leaflet producer may distribute them for you but it costs extra).  The leaflet should explain the place where the meeting will be held (ideally the Church), the start time, that God is still healing the sick today, that their will be a prayer team ready to lay hands on the sick for healing.  The service should start with a Welcome introduction, followed by worship (minimum 4 worship songs), after worship appropriate preaching on the Cross, salvation and the healing power Jesus Christ provides through His shed blood. First make a call for salvation, pray with individuals (take details) and then a second call for the sick. Lay hands on the sick and see the Lord healing them. At the end of the service make sure you invite people back to Church.
  5. Design and print posters with details of the Church (start time, website address, activities). The poster should be themed to the message on Sunday (do it once a month), Make it relevant for example use facebook logo as the poster picture with the message “You have a friends request” in block text with scripture John 5:13. Place it outside the Church. You can also let the public know the message will be placed on line if they wish to read it. You can get lots of  outreach poster idea’s from Google images.  This is a great way of generating interest in the Church.  You should do this kind of outreach over the whole year once a month, the non Christians in the community will start to look forward to the next poster and begin to look out for it!  Its a great idea if all the Local Church leaders join forces and get all the congregations involved.  The advantage of this is not just in costs but it brings unity and shows the community that we are believers together. Get the congregation to place them in their home windows, at work on notice boards, Local library, in shop windows, at the supermarkets or any other public place so that the posters can grab the attention of people passing by. Remember advertising works so the more posters the more attention.
  6. Host a free community lunch once a month and reach out to the elder members of the community although other younger people may come.
  7. The Umberella Army: Who said wet weather was a hinderance to evangelism? In the UK its one of our best assets to witnessing.  The idea is that your Church group or groups evangelise in the community using Umberalla’s. How I hear you ask? By helping people stay dry in wet weather by covering them while they get to their cars and unload shopping or by keeping them and their children dry after school assisting them to get to their cars in the rain. Link the outreach to a local Charity or a national one that people identify with, you can collect for the Charity as you reach out with the message of salvation. The Church should get permission to raise funds for the charity at the local shopping precinct/school, If you can afford it then get large printed Umberellas  lots of companies do this via the internet (www.printonumbrellas.com). Print the name of the Church on the umberella. Have an attractive invite to the Church printed with all your details. You should also carry a good clear Christian tract (knowing God) to give to those you interact with.  Gather together your eager Church group and organise them into two’s (get as many involved at Church as possible).  If you are keeping people dry at the shopping precinct one can push the trolley while the other keeps them dry, when they get in the car give them an invite to Church and a tract, how you collect for the charity is up to you (pot/envelope).  If you are keeping people dry after school, again give the leaflet and the tract when they are safely inside the car. Be blessed as you are defiantly going to make an impact with this outreach method. I would recommend wind vented umbrellas in exposed areas they are a bit more expensive but will last for years of outreach. Eventually people at the shopping precinct will be looking for you on rainy days.
  8. Community Award Ceremony: Host a community award ceremony recognising people that contribute to your community. Invite local Doctors, Teachers, Councillors, Police officers, Fire Service, Individuals running local Charities, and lolly pop ladies/men. Remember to include their families on the invite (this type of outreach suits medium to large Churches). Have enough Awards/trophies made to give to each dignitary and make sure they are engraved. Invite the local Radio and News paper well in advance. Don’t forget to invite the community by leafleting, putting posters up and by radio. Theme the service on serving others and sensitively introduce them to the gospel message. At the conclusion of the service present the awards. Remember that this is a high end budget event and require some fund raising. It requires a dedicated planning team as it will take months of meticulous planning (give yourselves 6 months). Ideally you should have a follow-on invitation to another event within that month.  Make sure you have a a well produced leaflet about the Church, include a testimony and a simple presentation of the message of salvation. This outreach can also be adapted to appreciate local business people.
  9. Hold a Church Service outdoors (in the Summer in a local park). Call it the Family fun day with activities on the Saturday, followed by an evening meeting with call for salvation and healing. After the service free hotdogs and refreshments. Follow the evening service with a Sunday morning service (don’t forget overnight security). This will make it easier for people to see what a church service is like, without the fear-factor of venturing into a Church building. You will have to get the whole Church involved for it to be a success. We have used this method and experienced people being healed, delivered and saved.
  10. Encourage your church congregation to participate in an ‘invite your neighbour to lunch’ Sunday. Sit down meal followed by personal testimonies at a couple of the tables, then a speaker sharing on salvation.
  11. Host a candle lite music concert or Carol service in the local park or shopping precinct. Make sure the choir is large(members from different local churches) and expect a lot of people to turn up.
  12. Remember: Don’t forget to inform and send information on outreaches to the local radio and newspaper, this is a great way of letting local people know what’s going on at your Church.
  13. Launch a community newsletter – Make it attractive with good graphics, give it a catchy name and make sure the articles are interesting. Make sure you do the main piece on a relevant topic preached at Church and get the salvation message in every time. The rest of the articles can be gathered from world and local news, try and select stories that make people smile or laugh. Ask the congregation to volunteer and post it on their street plus two or three others.
  14. This summer coordinate a ‘clean up our area’ Saturday followed by a barbecue and or hot-dog sausages at the Church building. You will be surprised at how many adults and children turn up. Invite them to come back on Sunday to the Church service.
  15. If you have a Church member who is a competent Fitness Fanatic then run a basic keep fit session in a local park at weekends (summer time) followed by warm drinks at the Church afterwards and of course an invitation to Sunday service.
  16. If you’re Church have available funds you can run a 12 month CD sermon outreach.  The CD cover should have all the Church service (group) times, address and website address. It should contain Christian music,  interesting preaching/teaching on the message of salvation, the pray of Salvation and testimonies from local people on how Jesus has changed their lives. Organise volunteers to post them by hand through 500 doors (black and white map of the area to high light streets and roads where CD posted). Every month for the next 12 months post 500 CD’s to different addresses by hand. At the end of twelve months you will have reached out to 6000 addresses with the gospel.
  17.  Organise the Church youth group and friends to run a community car wash on a Saturday at the local supermarket or outside the Church. All the proceeds will go to a local charity. Have a leaflet with excellent graphics; it should include all the Church details.  Make sure it has interesting information on the local charity you are raising money for. Include a simple presentation of the gospel of salvation found only in Jesus Christ (you can also hand out Church Tracts).
  18. Christmas Card Tract – Make sure you do this early in the year. Christmas is a fantastic time to reach out to family, friends and work colleagues with the message of salvation found only in Christ.  Why not have a custom card produced with the real meaning of Christmas printed on the inside.  You can place a scripture or the full message of salvation in the card. Contact  cauliflower cards for details, they have lots of great designs. You can do this as an individual or as a Church group.
